The 2019 List
Alrighty,
Here's the list of movies I saw this year, a rating out of 5 stars, and a quick general thought about each movie.
Beach Rats: **
This LGBT movie about a guy coming to terms with his sexuality tries very hard to be intellectual and poignant. Instead, I found it to be wandering, dreary, boring as hell in most spots, and overall another sad story how LGBT folks aren't allowed to have happy positive lives.
Bird Box: ****
The world is ending in this apocalyptic tale. I loved it because 'end of the world' stuff is my jam. It's somewhat cerebral though as the characters have to go through life outside with blindfolds, but they are not required if you're safely tucked away inside an interior - like a house. If you can empathize with the people in the story, then you can feel the terror of knowing that there are demons you can't see waiting to get you. I had to knock off one star, simply because they take this concept all the way through to the end. You never do get to see the demons - and I get that, but I hate that at the same time. A strong cast of well-known actors, and a really good story. Worth your time.
Laura Croft: Tomb Raider: ***
Indiana Jones with a strong female lead. The plot was somewhat predictable but completely enjoyable none-the-less. If you're seeking an action flick, this is a good choice.
Annihilation: ***
This movie was suggested to me, and I'll confess, when the previews for it were advertised, I was initially intrigued but then I completely forgot about it until recently. Another 'end of the world' type of story, but this time, alien-themed. Not bad, very visual, intriguing concepts, and strong female characters. Really, just short of a four-star rating, but the ending was too wishy-washy. "I don't know." was the answer. Really? REALLY? That to me is just lazy. I expected some kind of epiphany, or teaching, or warning from the alien encounter. Sigh.
